Bottle Birds!

This term in addition to learning about why birds have different beaks, we also did some wonderful bird art. Mrs Waller started these fabulous bottle birds with Team 18 and we couldn't wait to share them with you! 




























Athletics Day Results

Team 18 wins again!



We knew today would be one of the last times we could win the best class trophy at syndicate singing, so we talked about team work and everybody playing their part. And what happens when you decide you want something and really work hard?

Information report on the wrybill (ngutuparore)


Wrybill

The wrybill is native to NZ.  There are only 5000 left in the country.

Their beak looks a bit like a spoon.  It curves to the right.  The wrybill uses its beak to get larvae out of the rocks.

I think that we should keep them safe and never kill them.  Its predators are hawks, dogs and people.  But I am not going to hurt them.

Information Report on the Kiwi.

Kiwi

The kiwi is a native NZ bird. It is a bird that has tough feathers and it can not fly. Native means it only comes from a place and can’t find them anywhere else.

The kiwi is the only bird that has nostrils at the end of its beak. Their beaks chew berries and insects. The kiwis beak is a slender type. Slender means thin. Kiwis have whiskers that guide them around the forest during night. The kiwi has nostrils for sensing worms 3 cm underground . They have cells that can sense the vibration of worms. The kiwi uses their beak like a lever to get its food.

I am very sad that there are just 70,000 kiwis left in NZ and I hope we will get more kiwis in the future.

Athletics reminder

Don't forget Athletics day is tomorrow (Tuesday 17th November). Please wear appropriate clothes, footwear and sunscreen.  Parents if you want to come and have a picnic lunch with your child and watch some of the fabulous events please come along! Year 2's start with sprints at 9am. See you there! 

Police Dog Visit!

Zack from Room 19 and his Dad Sheridan arranged for their friend Brendan and Deja to come to school last Friday.  Brendan is a police officer and Deja his very well trained sidekick! It was so interesting to hear all about how he trained Deja and the work that Deja does as a police dog. Sheridan was kind enough (and brave enough) to put the special sleeve on so they could demonstrate how Deja can catch a suspect until Brendan can catch up to them.












Beak Geeks!

This Term our big idea is 'change' and the Juniors are looking specifically at how different birds have different types of beaks and why they are so different.
